PANJIM: A 24×7 anti-ragging helpline for students of Goa University and its affiliated colleges across the State will soon be set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with the aim of ending ragging culture.

To achieve this, UGC has recently floated a tender for selecting organisations which will be mandated with monitoring the 24×7 anti-ragging helpline, creating awareness to demote ragging in Universities and colleges as well as associated IT and database work.

Reportedly, Goa University has set up an Anti-Ragging Unit to conduct an on the spot enquiry into any incident of ragging referred to it. This could be reported by the head of the institution, faculty member, staff member, student, parent, guardian, employee of a service provider or by any other person, as the case may be.  Later, an enquiry report of that incident along with recommendations is to be submitted for action.

The Anti-Ragging Committee also ensures the compliance of provisions pertaining to UGC Regulations on curbing the menace of ragging as well as the provision of the Goa Prohibition of Ragging Act 2008; and to monitor, oversee and guide the anti-ragging squad.
