Tensions are mounting in Goa’s construction and excavation sector as the All-Goa Excavator Owners Association has issued a strong ultimatum to the government, demanding the resignation of certain Goa Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) officials over alleged favoritism and lack of support for local operators.
At a press briefing held earlier today, association members alleged that migrant workers are being prioritized over Goan operators when it comes to work contracts, especially at IDC sites. “We are constantly sidelined despite following all legal procedures. Contracts are awarded based on favoritism and connections, not merit or transparency,” said a senior member of the association.
Adding to the growing dissent, members claimed that when they point out irregularities or raise concerns about illegal work by migrant contractors, they are met with intimidation and threats. “If we highlight the wrongdoings, we are harassed. This is unacceptable,” said Bhobe, a long-time excavator operator and member of the association.
Backing their claims, representatives from the All Goa Truck Owners Association expressed solidarity, stating that local workers are facing increasing competition from migrant laborers. “We’ve been assured by the Chief Minister that this issue will be addressed. But if action is not taken soon, frustration among Goan workers may lead to unrest,” said a truck association member.
The excavator owners have threatened mass agitation if their concerns are not addressed promptly. “If the government fails to intervene, we will be forced to take matters into our own hands,” warned an association spokesperson, hinting at the possibility of large-scale protests.
The associations are demanding immediate government intervention, a transparent probe into contract allocations by the IDC, and the protection of job opportunities for local Goans. They plan to submit a formal memorandum to the Chief Minister and other concerned departments in the coming days.
