VASCO: In the wake of rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata, the Sub-District Hospital, Chicalim organised a martial arts workshop for female staff of the hospital.

Incharge of Sub-District Hospital, Chicalim Dr Sujata Kamat on Friday said that martial arts instructor Suraj Paradkar gave training to female staff. This initiative has been taken in the wake of rising incidents of crime against women across the country in the last few months. “We realised that it is very important for women to learn self-defence because nowadays we cannot expect someone else to defend you or help you out. It is always good to be self-dependent and independent yet strong mentally and physically,” said Dr Kamat.

The female staff of the hospital will be trained in basic self-defence techniques. Dr Kamat informed that Paradkar had agreed to impart training free of cost to the staff members who learnt basic tactics of self-defence which will help them to defend themselves in the wake of any untoward incidents.

Paradkar said that as many as 40 female staff participated in the self-defence workshop. The participants were given training in basic steps towards self-defence and trained them for ground fight which will help them to protect themselves in untoward situations. He has now urged the schools and educational institutions across the State to conduct martial arts and self-defence workshop as a compulsory subject so that students can be trained at a young age.
