MARGAO: Vasu Kamble Madar, a native of Jamboti, Belagavi, who was arrested by the Maina-Curtorim police on the charges of murdering Kanayakumar Mandal, 32 from Bihar, whose body was found at Loutolim in mysterious circumstances, was released on bail by the South Goa Sessions Court, Margao.

The Mandal’s body was found on June 24 midnight and the Maina-Curtorim Police had registered the case as murder on July 6. Four days later, the police arrested Madar (59) at his native place even as it was baffling how a case of a truck driver speeding on an empty road at night accidently hitting a body lying on the road, is facing murder charges. It was pertinent to note that no weapon was found with the alleged accused.

The police had earlier registered a case under 279 and 304 A of IPC and later on July 6, Section 302 of IPC was added to the case. Though the case was registered as murder, the police were perplexed about the sequence of events leading to Kanayakumar Mandal’s death, however even now key questions remain unanswered as to how Mandal died.

One senior police officer on condition of anonymity said that the case was not yet solved fully. It is learnt police are still in a fix as to who killed Mandal and how he died and the motive of the alleged killers.

As per the police sources, after 17 days of incident, the police arrested the accused in Mandal’s case, whose body was found at Loutolim in mysterious condition.

On June 24 late night, the Ponda Police had received the call informing that somebody was creating nuisance and accordingly the police rushed to the spot and brought Mandal to the police station, where he was questioned. Later he was asked to drop in a police jeep and before dropping him, the Ponda police did not make any station diary and he was put in the police vehicle and dropped near Borim Bridge. His body was found the next morning along the roadside at Loutolim. The identity was revealed as Kanayakumar Mandal on June 29.

Three policemen were suspended following disciplinary proceedings.
