PANJIM: The stage is set for an electrifying finale as FC Goa and Odisha FC prepare to battle for supremacy in the second edition of the Bhausaheb Bandodkar Memorial Trophy at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Friday.
Both teams enter the championship match with unblemished records, setting the stage for a thrilling contest that promises to captivate football enthusiasts across the region.
Defending champions FC Goa have enjoyed a remarkable run in the tournament, showcasing their dominance by remaining undefeated throughout the group stages.
The Gaurs’ impressive campaign included a notable victory over A-League side Brisbane Roar, cementing their position at the top of the table. Their journey to the final was further solidified by a convincing win against an Argentinean side in the semi-finals, demonstrating their ability to compete at an international level.
However, FC Goa faces a significant challenge as they enter the final without their head coach, Manolo Marquez, who is currently attending to India national team duties. In his absence, assistant coach G Singh has taken the reins, tasked with guiding the team to defend their title. The change in leadership adds an intriguing element to FC Goa's tactical approach in this crucial match.
On the other side of the pitch, Odisha FC, under the tutelage of coach Sergio Lobera, has been equally impressive. The team has maintained a flawless record in the competition, matching FC Goa's unbeaten streak. Their path to the final included a decisive victory over Brisbane Roar in the semifinals, showcasing their ability to overcome tough international opposition. Lobera's return to Fatorda, a ground he's familiar with, has proven fruitful for Odisha FC, with the team consistently delivering strong performances.
The anticipation for this clash is palpable, with Odisha FC coach Sergio Lobera expressing his excitement and respect for the opposition.
“It is always special to play against FC Goa, it's always special to play in Fatorda,” Lobera stated, acknowledging the significance of the match.
“We are excited about the final. FC Goa are a good team and everyone knows the quality they have. But I think we will have a good game and for us, it's one more test,” he added, highlighting the competitive spirit and mutual respect between the two finalists.
The tournament has garnered significant attention and praise, with Goa Football Association President Caitano Fernandes lauding its success.
“This tournament has been a success so far. All the teams have enjoyed the competition and two best teams have reached the finals,” Fernandes remarked. In a bid to ensure a vibrant atmosphere for the final, he extended an invitation to local supporters: “I wish the teams good luck ahead of the finals and I urge the Goan football fans to come and witness the finals. We have kept gate 8 open to the fans for the North, South, and East.”
