Cops caution motorists to follow traffic rules or get licence suspended

PANJIM: Goa Traffic Police has cautioned vehicle users to obey traffic rules in view of the strict implementation of directions by Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety to suspend the driving license of traffic violators for a minimum period of three months. In the first quarter of the current year, the department has recommended suspension of 4,000 licenses.   

“We are ensuring strict compliance of the SC committee’s directions. Our drive against various traffic violations is ongoing and for the six offences where the committee mandates suspension of licenses for three months, we have confiscated over 4,000 licenses and recommended to the Transport Department for suspension,” SP Traffic Dinraj Govekar told Herald.

For other offences like involvement in fatal accidents, the department sends a separate list to the Transport Department recommending action against the violator.

“Apart from issuing/compounding MV Challan for the traffic violation, we also confiscate the driving license of the defaulter under due acknowledgement and is forwarded to the concerned Assistant Director of Transport recommending suspension,” he said, adding, “ The motorists are therefore requested to drive/ride safely and responsibly.”

To curtail the increasing number of road accidents and fatalities the SC Committee on Road Safety in 2015 had issued directions to suspend the driving license for a period of not less than three months of the drivers/riders committing traffic violation such as driving/riding at an excessive speed (over-speeding), jumping of red light traffic signal, carrying overload in goods carriage, carrying persons in goods carriage, drunken driving/riding and using mobile phone while driving/ridding.

Over 4000 motorists have been penalised in the last three months for traffic offences such as jumping the red light, drunk driving, using mobile phones while driving and over speeding thus facing a suspension of their driving licence for a period of three months.

Since March13 onwards the traffic cell have penalised 2,353 motorists for over speeding.
