MARGAO: Superintendent of Police (South) Abhishek Dhania announced a substantial decline in the crime rate in South Goa, comparing the figures from the current year to those of the previous year, in a press release. The data analysis revealed a 28.42% decrease in reported crimes in 2023, with 768 incidents compared to 1,073 in 2022.

In the category of grave or heinous crimes, the district saw a notable drop from 24 murders in 2022 to nine in 2023, showcasing a significant 62.5% decrease. 

Impressively, all murder cases reported in 2023 were successfully detected, achieving a cent per cent detection rate. Other grave crimes, including attempt to murder, rape, and robbery, also attained a 100% detection rate For non-heinous or other crimes, there was a 29.23% reduction compared to the previous year. SP Dhania attributed this positive trend to strict action against criminals and anti-social elements, along with proactive preventive measures by the police.

As part of their preventive strategy, the district police registered 64,292 cases under compoundable offenses in 2023, reflecting a 17% increase from the previous year. Additionally, the police recorded a decrease of 11.38% in overall Motor Vehicle Accident cases, while there was a 49% rise in the booking of MV violations, acting as a deterrent to curb road accidents.

The police initiated 1,245 chapter proceedings in 2023, marking a 7% increase in preventive actions. This approach aimed at deterring troublemakers and monitoring the activities of potential wrongdoers. Furthermore, 28 cyber awareness programmes were conducted to educate the public about common cyber threats.

Under the 'Know Your Neighbours' initiative, a massive tenant verification drive took place, resulting in a 14.52% increase in filing Tenant Verification Forms in 2023. The 'Prayaas' initiative organised 24 programs in various slum areas, focusing on creating awareness about crimes against women and children.

SP Dhania highlighted the peaceful law and order situation in South District in 2023, attributing it to effective policing strategies and a methodical approach in implementing preventive plans. Regular peace committee meetings, totaling 20 in the year, were conducted to maintain communal harmony during various celebrations and events.

The press release concluded by acknowledging the meticulous security arrangements during national and international events, ensuring the smooth conduct of G-20 meeting, SCO meeting, National Games, and visits by President, Prime Minister, and other VVIPs in the district throughout 2023. 

In the realm of rape/POCSO (Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Bill, 2011)  cases, there has been a slight increase from 32 to 34 compared to the previous year. Analysis reveals that in the majority of cases, both the accused and the victim were acquainted. 

Many cases involve elopement, registered as rape/POCSO instances due to the involvement of minors. Some cases involve online contact where the accused groomed underage girls, persuading them to meet in person. The police, however, traced and apprehended these predators. 

Kidnapped teen girl traced within two hours of complaint, Bihar man held

VASCO: The Vasco police acted swiftly to apprehend a 20-year-old Bihar native, Mohammed Jhunnu, on charges of kidnapping a minor girl. The arrest was made within two hours of the complaint lodged by the parents of the girl.
The minor girl was traced along with the accused near Margao Railway Station, and Jhunnu was arrested under Section 363 of the IPC and Section 8 of the Goa Children's Act. The case is currently under investigation by PSI Mayur Sawant, operating under the guidance of Vasco PI Kapil Nayak and the overall supervision of Mormugao Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Salim Shaikh. The prompt action by the Vasco police ensured the safe rescue of the minor girl.
