CUNCOLIM: Someya Kumari has made Goa proud by
becoming the first person from the State to be commissioned in the Indian
Police Service under the AGMUT cadre. Incidentally, she is an MTech, who has
joined the police force.
Hailing from Arwal district of Bihar, her family
has settled in Goa since the time her father who retired as a Junior
Commissioned Officer was posted here.
Someya studied in different schools in the country
up to the sixth standard and joined Maria Bambina Convent High School,
Cuncolim, in the seventh class and answered her SSC exams through it.
After studying at Shree Damodar HSS of Science,
Margao, she did her BTech in Civil Engineering through Lovely Professional
University, Punjab.
She then did her Masters in Engineering through NIT
Surat in Environmental Engineering.
Her paper on Noise Pollution was published in
Springer, an international publication when she was studying for her Master’s
Degree.
Someya was always interested in helping people
through the civil services as she was inspired by her father’s work in the Army
and that is why despite having a Masters degree in engineering she opted for
UPSC which she answered she was studying for her master’s degree.
She was ranked 502 at the Union Public Service
Commission exams and 72 at the Indian Forest Service examinations and chose to
join the Indian Police Service.
As Someya is currently undergoing her training at
Hyderabad, her mother spoke to O Heraldo at their residence at Veroda in
Cuncolim as her father is also out of station.
“She opted for Goa because we have been living here
for some time now and Someya really loves the culture and weather here,” said
her mother Siyamani.
She said Someya chose IPS instead of forest service
primarily because this department is more in touch with people and she likes to
interact with people and help solve their problems.
“When we settled in Goa we had a problem of access
and the district administration helped us in getting the road constructed,”
said her mother adding that this act had greatly impressed her daughter.
“My daughter always loved travelling to different
parts of India where my husband was posted and hence she opted for AGMU cadre
as it would help her visit different places from the North East to the West,”
said Siyamani.
“I believe that parents should support and help
their children fulfil their desires,” said the mother while advising youngsters
and especially girls to pursue their goals with hard work and dedication.
“Youngsters have to embrace education, cultivate
perseverance and have a never-say-die attitude,” she said while asserting that
there are ample opportunities available only if one believes in his or her
dream.
“Avoid comparisons and believe in yourself as you
are the best. This is what I inculcated in my children and Someya has achieved
her dream,” she said.
Someya’s father is Jitendra Singh and she has a
sister Samavi Kumari who has obtained a diploma in computer engineering while
her brother Zikans Raj Singh is studying computer engineering and her mother is
a housewife.
