Curchorem man’s body parts found in decomposed state at Anmod Ghat

CURCHOREM:  In a new development to the gruesome murder of a Curchorem man, the local police on Wednesday recovered the decomposed body parts of the 38-year-old Basauraj Bassu Barki, which were stuffed in three rice bags and dumped in the jungle at Anmod Ghat by his wife along with four other accomplices.

According to police, the victim Basauraj’s wife 31-year-old Kalpana Bassu Barki confessed to killing him and cutting his body into pieces. She also admitted to stuffing them in the three empty rice bags along with four other accomplices, one who is still at large.

After her arrest and interrogation, Kalpana took the police to the crime site at Anmod Ghat where the cops recovered the three bags containing the victim’s body parts, which were dumped at three different places nearly 100 metres from the main road.

Investigating Officer PSI Ravindra Dessai informed that the wife killed her husband on April 2 over some heated arguments when the victim demanded Rs 50,000, which he had given to her. 

“The wife has confessed to Basauraj’s murder by strangulating him with a nylon rope and later cutting his body into pieces. She admitted to have transported them with the help of the four other accused,” informed Dessai.  

Police informed that Kalpana and three others namely 28-year-old Suresh Kumar, a native of Rajasthan and currently residing at Bebquegal; 25-year-old Abdul Karim Shaikh, a resident of Cacora-Curchorem and 45-year-old Pankaj Pawar, a resident of Aquem Margao, who were arrested under Sections 302 and 201 r/w 34 IPC have been remanded to seven days police custody by JMFC, Quepem and one of the accused is absconding. 

The incident came to light a month later when the wife of one of the accused narrated the incident to a social worker from Curchorem, who in turn informed the police on Tuesday. The police immediately swung into action and succeeded in nabbing the four accused including the victim’s wife.

 “The body parts have been preserved at Goa Medical College, Bambolim morgue for post mortem and further investigation is in progress,” Dessai added.

Meanwhile, PI Dessai said the fire tenders personnel from Curchorem Fire and Emergency Services refused to visit the crime site from the main road at Anmod Ghat to recover the victim’s body parts stuffed in the three bags. However, the bags were recovered with the help of police team along with the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council workers Ashok Hekdi and Menino Dias.

Meanwhile, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral has condemned the gruesome murder and congratulated the police team for nabbing the culprits. “The two minor children of the victim aged 10 and 8 years have been kept at the Child Care Home,” informed Cabral.

When media questioned on the status of the investigation into the murder of 65-year-old woman Shobha Arvind Karmali from Madhegal, Cacora-Curchorem at her bungalow in October 2016 by unknown persons, Cabral informed that the police are still working and hunting for clues.

Without elaborating much, Cabral said the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council has agreed to repair and maintain the CCTV cameras installed in Curchorem for the next five years by spending around Rs 1.98 crore. 

“The tenders for the same will floated immediately once the administrative approval is granted by the government, which will help the police in surveillance and detect crimes,” Cabral added.
