PANJIM: Revenue Minister Atanasio 'Babush' Monserrate on Monday disputed the unemployment data showing Goa as the State with highest unemployment.
Speaking to reporters, he said, “The Labour Commissioner had visited Delhi to have a meeting with the Union Labour Minister. He has pointed out that the data has basically not come from the labour department and it is totally wrong. We do not accept it."
Monserrate said the Directorate of Planning, Statistics & Evaluation should follow up with the Centre with regards to the data.
The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for the period between July 2023 and June 2024, released by the Union Planning and Statistics Ministry has said that the unemployment rate in Goa for all age groups stands at 8.7 per cent, which is way above the national average of 4.1 per cent.
The data further has pegged the youth unemployment rate for 15-29 years in the state at 19.1 per cent. The report, which covers the period from June 2023 to June 2024, pointed out that the problem of lack of jobs is more acute among Goan women compared to men, with labour force participation for women being at 21.2 per cent as compared to 56 per cent for men.
