Panjim: Empty liquor bottles and other forms of waste on Caranzalem beach continue to remain eye-sore raising questions on the efficiency of the beach cleaning activity being carried out.

A few metres of the stretch little away from Miramar beach has been left dirty as local fishermen have demanded that their community be given the contract to maintain cleanliness.

“If the government cannot handle it, give it to the Raponkars. Give us the contract. The filth all around does not allow us to carry out fishing activity. It’s a request to the government that the beach cleaning contract is not awarded to non-Goan agency but given to us,” one of the fishermen from Caranzalem told Herald.

The beach cleaning contract, often ridden in controversy, was handled by Drishti for some years until it lost the project to a Karnataka Corporation in a fresh tender released by the Tourism Department.

The Karnataka Commercial and Industrial Corporation Pvt Ltd is the new contractor, which, as far as its work on the Caranzalem beach has now left a bad impression.

The fishermen have alleged that barely one worker does the job while three persons are reportedly supervisors at the site.

A senior official in the tourism department said they will verify the matter with the contractor and ensure cleanliness of the Caranzalem beach area.
