aldona: Jacinto Sequeira of Carona has been quietly preserving the Christmas spirit through his handmade cribs, a hobby he turned into a cherished tradition over the past five years. A master of his art, Jacinto has become a trusted name for those seeking cribs that combine timeless design with personal touch.

Jacinto’s journey began in his childhood when he started making cribs for himself. "At a young age, I would craft cribs, and till today, I continue the tradition," he recalls. Initially a hobby, his talent didn’t go unnoticed by friends who encouraged him to make cribs for others. With their support and recognition, including awards for his craftsmanship, Jacinto began taking orders, providing cribs that bring joy to many homes during Christmas.

Known for his rustic and old-school designs, Jacinto’s cribs are a nod to simpler times. “People prefer natural cribs, so I create them using materials like wood, leather, and traditional accents,” he says. Each crib takes him five to six days to complete, requiring meticulous attention to detail.

Using walnut wood for its soft texture, Jacinto carves, polishes, and assembles every piece himself. "Making a crib isn’t easy. It needs patience, a focused mind, and a lot of effort," he explains. Lights, stars, and droll finishing touches like a Christmas-ey coconut tree, or a ladder make the cribs stand out, earning Jacinto appreciation from his patrons year after year.

For Jacinto, the joy of creating cribs outweighs the challenges of the work. "When people call to appreciate my work, it makes me happy," he shares.

Despite changes in preferences over the years, Jacinto remains devoted to his craft. “Goans used to love bicycles and old-style cribs, but these traditions are fading. Yet, I keep doing this

because it brings happiness,” he says.

As the festive season arrives, Jacinto’s workshop becomes a hive of activity, producing cribs that carry not just the spirit of Christmas but also the heart of a craftsman dedicated to keeping a beautiful tradition alive.
