GMC doctor charged with employing child

Sentenced to 3 years jail, fine imposed

PANJIM: A senior doctor from the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim has been sentenced to three years of imprisonment for employing child labour at his home in Bambolim.   
The Children’s Court on Friday also imposed a penalty amount of Rs 2 lakh on two counts under section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code on Dr Zelio D’Mello, head of the Orthopaedic Department at Goa Medical College and hospital. 
The doctor, who has conducted successful surgeries and even a knee replacement was charged with employing an underage Goan girl at his house for domestic work in 2009 and was accused of ill-treating her.
