Goa Court Resolves Dispute Over Noise Monitoring Committee Members, Janice Crasto Appointed

Shiva Valley intended to organize a celebration for Mahashivratri, shortly following an incident where an individual was stabbed on February 18 during an overnight event at the venue. Harichandra Gawas, Police Inspector of Anjuna Police Station, remarked, "They aimed to hold a party yesterday for Mahashivratri, but we did not permit it," noting that the event was halted on the same night as the stabbing incident. "We visited the hospital to see the victim, and since he expressed no desire to file a complaint, we had to leave."

PORVORIM: The ongoing conflict between the government and the advocates for noise pollution control in Anjuna-Vagator regarding the appointment of members to the Noise Monitoring Committee (NMC) is expected to reach a resolution by Monday. Justice MS Karnik of the High Court of Bombay at Goa has confirmed that the second member of the panel must be finalized by March 3. Janice Crasto, a resident of Vagator, has already been appointed to the new NMC.

During the hearing on Thursday, Advocate General Devidas Pangam informed the court that he had two candidates for the NMC to consider. Justice Karnik remarked on the necessity of a broader selection of candidates to ensure optimal choices. The judge pointed out that, given the dissolution of the previous committee, a two-member committee would be established.

"Since we have already agreed on one name, the other should be resolved by Monday," stated Justice Karnik. Nevertheless, the nomination of Janice Crasto to the NMC, as proposed by Amicus Curiae Nigel Costa Frias and accepted by the Government and all parties involved, faced some opposition when petitioner Desmond Alvares raised an objection. Advocate Gilman Coelho Pereira expressed astonishment, stating, "It is surprising that you oppose the name recommended by the Amicus Curiae."
