PANJIM: In a major disappointment, Goa University (GU) failed to retain its spot in the 100 best universities in the county as per the ranking declared by the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry.
The varsity’s ranking has seen decline over the years in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)
In 2021, the university ranked at 96th spot from 81st in 2020. The GU had finished 93rd in 2019 and 68th in 2018. This year, it stands in 101-150 rank bracket.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday released the NIRF rankings 2022. The rankings have covered various categories, including, engineering, pharmacy, management, overall, research etc.
Incidentally, none of the institutions in Goa could find a place in the first 100 institutes in the country in the ‘overall’ category ranking.
In lines with the GU, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Goa slipped three spots and secured the 88th rank among engineering institutes, while Goa Institute of Management (GIM) also dropped by one spot to secure 36th position among top 75 management institutes in the country.
The NIT had secured 85th spot while GIM had secured the 35th rank in 2021.
Amongst higher education institutions, the only other Goan college that could make the cut in this ranking was Goa College of Pharmacy with an all India ranking of 55th in the ‘pharmacy’ category. The college had secured the 56th rank in 2021, thus witnessing a minimal jump.
Categories where Goa did not secure any position in the top 100 were in colleges, medical, law, architecture, dental and research.
The rankings for all colleges and universities across the country given by the Ministry were based on teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice, graduation outcome; outreach and inclusivity; and peer perception.
The NIRF conducts physical audits and checks to ensure that the data provided by the various institutes is authentic.
