PANJIM: Goa University (GU) has slipped 15 spots in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of 100 best universities in India to the 96th spot. In 2020, GU had been ranked 81st.
GU had finished 93rd in 2019 and 68th in 2018. In the 2021 rankings, GU managed to get an overall score of 38.96.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday released the NIRF rankings 2021. The rankings have covered various categories, including, engineering, pharmacy, management, overall, research etc.
Besides GU, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Goa secured the 85th rank among engineering institutes, while Goa Institute of Management (GIM) secured the 35th rank amongst top 75 management institutes in the country. GIM had secured the 48th rank in 2020 and has jumped up in 2021.
Amongst higher education institutions, the only other Goan college that could make the cut in this ranking was Goa College of Pharmacy with an all India ranking of 56th in the ‘pharmacy’ category. The college had secured the 47th rank in 2020, thus dropping down in 2021.
Incidentally, none of the institutions in Goa could find a place in the first 100 institutes in the country in the ‘overall’ category ranking.
Categories where Goa did not secure any position in the top 100 were in colleges, medical, law, architecture, dental and research.
The rankings for all colleges and universities across the country given by the Ministry were based on teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice, graduation outcome; outreach and inclusivity; and peer perception.
The number of Indian institutes registered for the NIRF ranking 2020 increased by 20 per cent compared to 2019. In 2020, 3,800 institutes participated in NIRF rankings. NIRF conducts physical audits and checks to ensure that the data provided by the various institutes is authentic.
