PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday said that the State government will felicitate 14 first legal heirs of martyrs in the freedom struggle in Goa as part of 63rd Liberation Day event.
Addressing a press conference at his official residence at Altinho, the Chief Minister said the legal heirs of martyrs will be given Rs 10 lakh and certificate on the eve of Liberation Day.
He said as many as 74 persons had sacrificed their lives in the freedom struggle of Goa and legal heirs of 14 of them have been identified and will be felicitated at a special function to be held at the Assembly Complex at Porvorim on December 18.
He said he had already visited the family of Martyr Karnail Singh Benipal at Ludhiana in Punjab and presented a cheque of Rs 10 lakh as one time monetary support to Charanjeet Kaur, the spouse of the martyr.
The other martyrs whose legal heirs will be honoured are Bala Raya Mapari from Bardez, Basavraj Hudgi from Bidra, Karnataka, Sheshnath Wadekar from Nashik, Maharashtra, Tulshiram Balkrishna Hirye from Kolaba, Maharashtra, Sakharam Yeshwant Shirodkar from Ekoshi, Rohidas P Mapari from Assonora, Yeshwant Sukha Agarwadekar from Oxel, Siolim, Ramchandra Nevgi from Bicholim, Bapu Vishnu Gavas from Pernem, Babla Dhondo Parab from Pernem, Laxman Narayan Velingkar from Veling, Ponda, Keshavbhai Sadashiv Tengse from Canacona and Parshuram Srinivas Acharya from Poinguinim.
The Chief Minister said the martyrs played a crucial role in Goa's struggle for liberation and their bravery, sacrifice and dedication to the cause of freedom continue to inspire generations of Goans.
