A tragic railway accident claimed the life of a 23-year-old man on Monday morning near Sancoale, after he was struck by a moving train while walking along the tracks with earphones in.

The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. between Cansaulim and Sankval at kilometre 99/5-6, as per a wireless message issued by Vasco Railway Police Station. According to a memo from the Deputy Station Master of Vasco Railway Station, the victim was reportedly walking in the middle of the track while talking on his mobile phone and wearing earphones when he was hit by an oncoming train.

Despite the train driver sounding multiple warning horns, the youth did not move away in time. He sustained multiple fatal injuries and died on the spot.

The deceased has been identified as Arun Horo (23), son of William Horo, a resident of Munda Toli, Gulda, Tumdegi, District Simdega, Jharkhand. The police and railway officials visited the scene and later shifted the body to the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) morgue in Margao for preservation and post-mortem examination.

Vasco Railway Police have ruled out foul play and registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The investigation is being led by PI Amarnath Passi under the supervision of DySP Gurudas Kadam of Mormugao.

Authorities have once again urged the public to refrain from walking on railway tracks and to avoid using mobile phones or earphones near active rail lines, citing safety concerns.
