MARGAO: The South Goa District Collector's office has disbursed Rs 1.76 crore in compensation to 338 individuals whose houses were damaged by recent heavy rains. This financial assistance is aimed at helping affected residents begin the process of repairs and recovery.
According to the District Collector's office, the compensation was distributed just before Ganesh Chaturthi, following applications from many homeowners for damage caused by the rains.
South Goa experienced significant rain-related damage, with numerous houses severely affected, causing major disruptions in the lives of the affected families. Urgent repairs and support have been needed.
Salcete taluka reported the highest number of damaged houses, with 83 affected. Quepem followed with 46 damaged houses, while Sanguem recorded 68. In Canacona, 28 houses were damaged, Mormugao saw 40, Dharbandora reported 23, and Ponda had 50 houses affected by the heavy rains.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant recently assured that the compensation disbursement process for damaged houses would be expedited. Authorities were able to deliver on this promise, ensuring that compensation reached the affected homeowners before Ganesh Chaturthi. The maximum compensation amount has been raised to Rs 2 lakh, a significant increase from the previous maximum of Rs 50,000.
