3,587 farmers get financial relief for crop loss

PANJIM: The State Agriculture Deparment on Friday released Rs 3.63 crore in compensation to farmers who were impacted due to monsoon related crop loss.

Agriculture Director Sandeep Foldessai on Friday said that as many as 3,587 farmers in the state have received compensation to the tune of Rs 3.63 crore on account of damage to their crops due to unprecedented heavy rains received by the state this year.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “A total of 2,494 Krishi card holders have been compensated with Rs 2.99 crore while 1,093 farmers without Krishi cards have received Rs 64 lakh in compensation.”

“It is important that farmers have Krishi card but in some cases it was found that farmers were not having the Krishi cards. We received direction from Chief Minister that those farmers who do not have Krishi cards they too should be provided compensation. So we gave compensation to farmers without Krishi cards as well," he said.

Foldessai said the state government is still in the process of assessing impact of the rains to provide further relief to affected farmers.

He said the compensation amount has been transferred directly transferred into the account of the farmers. The main beneficiaries of the compensation were paddy and vegetable growers, he added.

Mormugao Taluka farmers receive Rs 10 lakh compensation for crop damage: Compensation of approximately Rs 10 lakh was disbursed to affected farmers from Mormugao taluka whosecrops were damaged due to recent rains.

The compensation was provided to farmers through government support and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The compensation was disbursed to farmers whose crops was damaged at harvesting stage due to heavy rains.
