MARGAO: The Salcete Taluka Enforcement Squad conducted surprise inspections at several establishments near Benaulim Beach on Monday, resulting in multiple violations under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
Led by Joint Mamlatdar V Gaurav Gaonkar, the enforcement team issued four challans for violations of Section 4 of COTPA, which mandates the display of ‘No Smoking’ signboards in public places. Two hotels and two restaurants were found in violation, resulting in total fines of Rs. 1,400.
“These inspections are part of our ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with tobacco control laws in public spaces,” said Gaonkar.
During the inspection, establishments were provided specific instructions regarding the proper display of ‘No Smoking’ boards in accordance with COTPA Act specifications. This guidance aims to ensure future compliance and avoid similar violations.
The enforcement team included Suresh K Pagi, Sanitary Inspector from PHC Cansaulim; Police Constable Tony D’Souza from Colva Police Station; Francisco Carvalho, Head Clerk from the Salcete Mamlatdar’s office; and Lorna Fernandes representing GOACAN.
It may be recalled that recently such a raid was held at Colva and more such raids are expected to be conducted in other parts of the coastal belt with the aim of enforcing smoking regulations in tourist areas, particularly along popular beach destinations.
