MARGAO: The situation at the Margao Municipal Council library is quite alarming, despite recent initiatives to modernise it, especially given its status as one of the oldest libraries in the area. The fact is that it has been nearly 10 years without a full-fledged librarian.
The librarian’s post has been vacant since the retirement of Cypriano Andrade in 2014-15. Despite passing several resolutions to address this issue, the civic body has not taken action to fill the post.
However, the situation at the Margao Municipal Council library has become even more challenging with the assistant librarian going on childcare leave. This has further disrupted the already strained operations of the library. With many staff members lacking essential skills, the reliance on someone from another section to manage the library temporarily only adds to the chaos.
This significant gap in skills has severely hampered the library’s operations, making it challenging to maintain the collection and provide adequate support to patrons.
According to sources, there are thousands of recently purchased books at the library that remain unregistered and disorganised due to a lack of adequate manpower. This backlog highlights the urgent need for qualified staff to manage the influx of new materials and ensure proper cataloging and accessibility.
The fact that the audit team has noted the vacant librarian’s post highlights the seriousness of the situation at the library. The lack of oversight and qualified management is evident, especially following the physical verification of library books conducted in 2021.
Councillor Camilo Barreto’s remarks underscore the frustration surrounding the prolonged vacancy of the librarian’s post at the library. His acknowledgment of the library’s historical significance and the vital role it plays for book lovers and students highlights the community’s dependence on this resource.
Barreto questioned how a library can function effectively without a full-time librarian.
He emphasised the civic body’s responsibility to ensure proper management and maintenance of such an important institution.
Govind Naik, a citizen, highlighted the challenges faced by patrons at the Margao Municipal Council library, especially in light of the inadequate staffing. He appreciated the assistant librarian’s hard work and acknowledged the effort under difficult circumstances.
He also underscored the reality that relying on one individual is not sustainable.
Calling upon the civic body to fill the vacant librarian post, he pointed out that a well-staffed library is essential for managing its valuable resources effectively and ensuring that visitors receive the support they need.
