MARGAO: The passing of Honorato Velho, a veteran educationist and prominent figure in Goan society, has left a profound impact on the community.
As news of his death spread, tributes began pouring in from all quarters, highlighting the deep respect and affection he commanded throughout his life. Velho, who resided in his mansion in Mazilwaddo-Benaulim, was widely recognised for his significant contributions to Goa’s educational landscape.
Throughout his illustrious career, Velho held several influential positions, including serving as the headmaster of St Xavier’s Institute and principal of St Alex Higher Secondary School, both in Curtorim. His expertise extended beyond education, as he was renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of Goan history, culture, and customs. This breadth of knowledge made him a valuable resource for many seeking insights into the region’s rich heritage.
Velho’s legacy lives on through his family, including his wife Herminia Mascarenhas e Velho, herself a respected educator, and their children Garin, Guitry, and Gillisanne, along with their spouses and children. The loss has resonated deeply within the community, with thousands expressing their sorrow and sharing memories of the man who touched so many lives.
Former MLA adv Radharao Gracias, a close friend of Velho, shared a poignant recollection of his final meeting with the educationist. Gracias described Velho as a tall, handsome man with a powerful voice, unafraid to speak his mind and actively involved in various social causes. He emphasised Velho’s role as a prominent activist and valued opinion leader, particularly in matters related to education and Goan culture.
The Catenian Margao Circle also paid tribute to Velho, acknowledging his contributions as a former Circle President, Area President, and ICC Chairman. Their message, honouring Velho’s legacy, highlighted his visionary leadership and selfless service, which left an indelible mark on the organisation and the wider community.
As the community prepares to bid farewell to this beloved figure, the funeral service for Velho is scheduled to take place at Holy Trinity Church, Benaulim, todayw. The event is expected to draw a large gathering, with many seeking to pay their final respects and celebrate the life of a man who dedicated himself to education, culture, and community service.
