PANJIM: The Guwahati Police, in collaboration with the Crime Branch of Goa Police, apprehended a 30-year-old Dipankar Barman, accused of being involved in a Ponzi scheme worth approximately Rs 500 crore.
The arrest was made as part of an ongoing investigation into the DB Stock scam. Barman was reportedly residing in Abhiguna Residency in Guwahati.
In post on X (formerly Twitter) the Guwahati Police said, “Absconding accused Dipankar Barman of DB Stock scam has been arrested in Goa by a Team from CGPD under leadership of Amit Mahato, IPS, ACP Pan Bazar with the support of Crime Branch of @Goa_Police in connection with an ongoing investigation.”
The Crime Branch of Goa Police said, “Today a team led by Shri Mahato Amitkumar Sidhuprasad, IPS, ACP (Panbazaar), Guwahati, came to Goa for investigation in connection with Pan Bazar PS Case No 374/2024 U/S 316(5) /318(4) 3(5) BNS, R/W sec 21(1)(2)(3) The Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019. That necessary assistance was provided to them by the Crime Branch team."
“The accused person Dipankar Barman, a resident of Abhiguna Residency, Golanagar Police Sation, Zalikhari, was arrested in Goa. The accused person is involved in a Ponzi scheme of around Rs 500 crore,” the Crime Branch said.
According to the reports, the authorities had been struggling to locate the owner of the firm in the DB Stock Broking financial fraud case.
It is one of the most significant scams in Assam in recent times.
Before, ACP Amit Mahato took over the case, which had left the investors in the loss of Rs 7,000 crore, it was being investigated by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Bishal Das.
After the scandal came to light, the Assam police reportedly detained Barman’s fiancée, Monalisa Das, in the Khaghuli area of Guwahati. She was apprehended by the Pan Bazar police while allegedly attempting to evade capture.
