The first all-female Indo-Western fusion band takes the stage at the prestigious KALARANG festival today. This ensemble, inspired by the late sitarist Pandit Yograj Naik, promises to deliver a unique musical experience that bridges traditional Indian classical music with contemporary genres like jazz, funk, and pop.

Comprising eight skilled musicians, the band will showcase original compositions by Naik, featuring intricate ragas such as Jog Charukeshi, Bhimplas Kirwani, and Hansdhwani. Each member brings a rich tapestry of musical backgrounds, showcasing their expertise and dedication to their craft.

The musicians are not only passionate but also well-trained, each bringing a wealth of experience to the stage.

Leading the sitarists is Vandana P. Sawant, who holds a Bachelor in Music and has studied under luminaries such as Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, Ustad Chhote Rehmat Khan, and Pandit Chandrashekhar Naringrekar. Her extensive training equips her to masterfully interpret the intricacies of classical music.

Joining her is Archana S. Naik, also a sitarist with a Bachelor of Music. She has performed with esteemed groups, including Pt. Ravi Chary’s Symphony and for the Indian Coast Guard. Currently teaching at the Kalangan Centre of Performing Arts and Sharada Kala Mandir, she continues to inspire the next generation of musicians.

Punam Dayanand Budalkar, the third sitarist, has a distinguished background, having studied under Pt. Yograj Naik and other notable mentors. A representative of Goa at national youth festivals, she has garnered accolades, including first place in the All Goa sitar competition. Her performances at renowned events like the Sangeet Sammelan further cement her status as a rising star.

The band also features bassist Felicia D. Mello, a versatile musician proficient in multiple instruments including bass guitar, drums, and piano. Felicia discovered her passion for music at 12 and has since overcome significant challenges, such as learning to play right-handed despite being left-handed. She holds several qualifications from Rockschool London, showcasing her dedication to her craft.

Drummer Anastazia D. Mello complements the ensemble with her extensive experience in piano, drums, and vocals. Her musical journey began at 14, and since then, she has expanded her expertise across genres. She has performed alongside international artists and has also achieved several prestigious qualifications, making her a formidable presence in the band.

Completing the group is keyboardist Eustacia Maria Lena Dmello, a music educator with over 20 years of experience. With an array of qualifications, including A.T.C.L. and L.R.S.L. in piano, Eustacia believes music serves as a powerful medium for expression and connection. Her educational background, combined with her passion for teaching, allows her to shape and inspire aspiring musicians at the ‘Taught to Teach’ music school.

Together, these women are not just reviving traditional sounds; they are innovating within the genre. The fusion of classical Indian music with modern influences is not only fresh but also highlights the versatility of their training and backgrounds. The band’s performance promises to be a vibrant celebration of culture and creativity, showcasing how music can transcend boundaries and bring people together.
