MARGAO: After a year-long wait, the government has appointed Anthony Barbosa as the new President of the Tiatr Academy (Goa). The appointment order was issued on Wednesday by Sagun R Velip, Director
of the Art and Culture
Department.
While Barbosa's role is confirmed, the government has yet to announce the other ten members who will complete the Tiatr Academy's governing body. Over the past year, the academy functioned without a president, with the Director of Art and Culture managing its operations following the expiration of the previous body's term in October 2023.
In an interview, Barbosa expressed his enthusiasm for revitalising the tiatr community. "My goal is to elevate tiatr to a global platform and to push for the creation of a dedicated auditorium for TAG," he shared.
The absence of a leadership team over the past year had stalled several of the academy’s projects, leading to delays in key decisions that are vital to the promotion and development of tiatr, a deeply rooted cultural art form in Goa. Many artists expressed concern, noting that important programmes had been placed on hold, and proposals submitted by the previous council remained unattended.
