MARGAO: Following recent sanitation improvements, authorities have shifted their focus to addressing traffic congestion at the Cutbona fishing jetty, one of Goa’s busiest fishing hubs.

A joint inspection was conducted recently, involving representatives from the Fisheries Department, Cuncolim Police, Traffic Cell,

and Coastal Police to assess the situation.

The site that reported a cholera outbreak and several cases of dengue last month, is now at the

centre of discussions surrounding parking issues and congestion caused by fish transport vehicles.

During the inspection, various factors contributing to the traffic woes were examined. The primary concerns identified included the unauthorised parking of insulated fish transport vehicles on the approach road and at the jetty itself, along with their prolonged presence at the jetty.

Authorities noted that indiscriminate parking of vehicles, often left unattended, has contributed to the traffic problems at the jetty.

To address these issues, measures such as introducing identity cards for fish agents and boat owners are being considered to ensure only authorised personnel are present at the jetty.

One proposed solution to alleviate congestion is to regulate the timing of fish transport vehicles, allowing them to arrive at the jetty only when boats are docked, to minimise the rush of vehicles in the area.

In related news, during a late media briefing at his residence earlier this week, Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira, who has been personally overseeing the repairs and cleanliness efforts at the jetty, expressed confidence that improvements have been made following the intervention of government officials in consultation with boat owners. He also noted that work on the new toilet facility was ongoing. Sequeira is likely to inspect the Cutbona jetty area on Thursday at 3.30 pm.
