BICHOLIM: Peeved over lack of support from the government, the villagers of Barazan, Kudchirem on Sunday visited Shree Sateri temple and sought divine intervention to stop the proposed construction and demolition (C&D) waste plant in the village.
The State government has acquired 45,000 sqmts of land at Kudchirem to set up C&D waste plant, but the villagers have vehemently opposed it.
On August 29 this year, the villagers tried to stop the survey and demarcation of the land claiming that they do not want the waste plant in the village. Even the Maulinguem-Kudchirem gram sabha had passed a resolution opposing the proposed C&D waste plant.
Prasad Umarye appealed to the villagers to keep aside their political affiliations and differences and vowed to remain united not to allow setting of C&D waste plant.
The villagers demanded to know what measures have been taken by the village panchayat even as all panchayat members were present in the temple
Umarye said, “In Mahabharat, Pandavas joined cousins Kauravas to thwart the attack of Ghandaravas. In a similar manner we will have to unite to foil the government’s plans.”
Locals Manohar Gaonkar, Savlo Gaonkar and Shivnath Gaonkar appealed to the people to remain united and not to allow the waste plant as it would affect the environment and destroy the existence of the village.
“Let us remain united and protect the village for posterity,” they stated.
