MARGAO: Beef vendors in South Goa are facing significant challenges due to a shortage of supply, prompting calls for government intervention to resolve the issue. On Saturday, several vendors at the South Goa Planning and Development Authority market were forced to close their shops due to the lack of beef stock.
The shortage, which has affected the availability of beef in Goa, is largely attributed to disruptions in supply from Karnataka, a key supplier to the State. Vendors explained that the stoppage of supplies at the Karnataka border has severely impacted their ability to meet consumer demand, leaving them with little stock to sell. This issue is particularly concerning given the high demand for beef, especially during feasts, celebrations, and Sundays when sales typically increase.
In December 2020, a similar shortage occurred due to a drop in supplies from Karnataka, coinciding with the Christmas and New Year season, a period of peak demand. The current situation echoes that past disruption, as Goa's internal beef supply is insufficient to meet the needs of both locals and tourists.
Leading beef vendors, who usually sell over 200 kg of meat daily, noted that their reliance on Karnataka for stock is crucial. During times of increased demand, such as festivals, sales can reach 300 kg per day.
Javed Bepari, a local meat vendor, expressed frustration over the situation, noting that sourcing beef from Karnataka has become increasingly difficult due to transport restrictions at the border.
"We have been informed that beef supplies are being halted at the Karnataka border. This has led to a drastic reduction in the availability of meat for us to sell," he said.
Another vendor shared that the limited stock forced him to close his shop on Saturday morning, only reopening later in the afternoon after receiving a delayed delivery.
"The supply within Goa is not enough to meet our needs, which is why we rely on sourcing from other States," he said.
Despite the shortage, vendors have stated that beef prices remain stable for the time being. However, they emphasised the urgent need for a resolution to ensure a steady supply and prevent further disruptions to their business.
