Local fisherman Pele Fernandes has once again been recognized for his dedication to marine conservation. The Goa Forest Department has issued a letter of appreciation to Fernandes for his commendable efforts in rescuing Olive Ridley Sea turtles on April 9 off the coast of Benaulim.

Fernandes, who has long been known for his commitment to protecting marine life, spotted the endangered turtles entangled and in distress during his fishing expedition. Acting swiftly, he ensured their safe release back into the ocean—earning praise from both the local community and environmental authorities.

This is not the first time the Benaulim native has been applauded for his conservation efforts. His continued vigilance and proactive actions highlight the critical role local fishermen can play in safeguarding marine biodiversity.

The Forest Department’s gesture underscores the importance of community involvement in wildlife protection, especially for species like the Olive Ridley turtle, which is listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss and human interference.
