Farmers from Betalbatim staged a protest on Saturday, expressing outrage over the construction of an illegal retaining wall that has blocked their traditional access to agricultural fields.
The farmers said the wall has created a serious obstacle, particularly with the harvest season approaching and large tracts of paddy already cultivated.
For decades, local farmers have used a specific path to reach their fields beyond the now-blocked area. The sudden construction of the wall has not only disrupted their routine but also threatens to delay or even prevent harvesting, potentially causing significant losses to their seasonal yield.
Speaking to reporters, one farmer said, “This access route has been in use for generations. We were shocked to find it suddenly blocked by a wall.”
The farmers have demanded the immediate demolition of the wall, claiming it was built without the necessary permissions and in violation of their right to traditional access.
Their concerns were echoed by Benaulim Sarpanch Anthony Fernandes who confirmed the structure was illegally constructed.
“The panchayat had made it clear to the party responsible that any construction would only be permitted if access to the fields remained open,” Fernandes said. “However, the party concerned failed to comply with this condition, and the wall was built in violation of local norms.”
Fernandes added that the panchayat will not issue a construction licence unless the issue is resolved and access is restored. He further urged the authorities to step in and prevent the blocking of traditional pathways used for agricultural purposes.
“This is not just about one wall; it’s about preserving the rights of the farming community and protecting their means of livelihood,” he said.
The incident has sparked growing unrest in the village, with several farmers threatening further agitation if the matter is not addressed promptly. They are appealing to the government and concerned departments to take swift action to ensure the wall is removed and their access to the fields restored before crops are damaged or lost.
