Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Thursday announced that a Bill aimed at addressing the issue of illegal structures in the state will be introduced in the Goa Legislative Assembly next Tuesday. The proposed legislation is set to be discussed in detail during today’s cabinet meeting.
The announcement comes amid rising concerns from lawmakers and the public over the fate of numerous existing homes, particularly those built before the implementation of the Regional Plan 2021 (RPG-2021).
Raising the issue in the Assembly, Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira questioned the government’s stance on pre-existing structures, warning that entire villages—such as Pomburpa, Ecoxim, and parts of Aldona—could face demolition under current road width and setback norms outlined in RPG-2021.
Ferreira urged the government to consider the ground realities and provide clarity on the future of these homes, many of which have been standing for decades.
The forthcoming Bill is expected to outline provisions for regularisation and provide relief to affected residents, even as it seeks to strike a balance between planned development and protecting the rights of long-standing homeowners.
