BITS Pilani Student’s Death Not Suicide, Post-Mortem Reveals Neglect of Health and Mental Care

The recent death of a BITS Pilani Goa campus student has been confirmed as a case of health-related neglect rather than suicide, according to the post-mortem report.

The report revealed that the student, who was under anti-depression medication, died after choking on vomit in his sleep. The findings have ruled out suicide, raising fresh concerns about the adequacy of mental health support and medical care in premier institutes.

Dr. Madhu, who has been reviewing campus-related health incidents, noted that three out of the last five student deaths at BITS Goa were linked to health neglect, highlighting systemic gaps in providing timely assistance and counselling for students battling stress, depression, and related illnesses.

The case has sparked discussions on the urgent need for comprehensive mental healthcare frameworks in India’s top educational institutions, where academic pressure and lack of adequate medical supervision continue to be pressing issues.
