PANJIM: Attacking Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over tiger reserve issue, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Wednesday alleged that the government is shelving the proposal to sell Mhadei to Karnataka.

In a statement, he said, “Not only National Tiger Conservation Authority suggested that Tiger Reserve in Goa is crucial, but High Court’s directions have also been shelved by the adamant and land dealer/broker Goa BJP government. It challenged the HC order over Tiger conservation plan only to sell land and sell Mhadei to Karnataka.”

He was reacting to National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) requesting the Goa government to act on the proposal to designate Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary as a tiger reserve.

Alemao said, “As a Goan, I am thankful to South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes for raising this issue with the ministry after school children wrote to him. Ministry in response has said that it’s waiting for the Goa government’s decision.”

“Our children are also concerned about conservation of tigers, but the BJP is not. It is very shameful on the part of the government, who is neglecting the proposal of NTCA,” Alemao lamented.

Alemao said that it is wrong that the BJP was government rejecting the proposal to set up a tiger reserve in the state, on the pretext that Goa’s small wildlife sanctuaries did not fit the National Tiger Conservation Authority's (NTCA) criteria.
