BMC Steps In to Tackle Poor Conditions at Bicholim Market

Published on

The Bicholim market is grappling with deteriorating infrastructure and a noticeable drop in footfall, both of which are taking a toll on local vendors’ livelihoods. In response, the Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) recently convened to address these pressing issues and announced plans for key renovation work, including the repair of the market’s damaged staircase and other essential maintenance to improve safety and accessibility.

As part of these efforts, the council has decided to remove shops located beneath the old staircase, citing safety hazards and the fact that these establishments lack legal recognition. Councillors noted that the affected vendors pay only a sopo tax and are not registered as official shopowners, complicating matters of compensation or relocation.

To move forward effectively, the BMC’s chief officer has instructed the market inspector and technical department to prepare a comprehensive status report. This report will inform the renovation and maintenance plan aimed at reviving the market’s infrastructure.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to revitalize the Bicholim market, enhance safety for both vendors and shoppers, and restore footfall to support local commerce. The council’s actions underscore the critical role the market plays in the community and the need for timely, targeted intervention to restore its function and vibrancy.
