MARGAO: Villagers from Loutolim have strongly criticised Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira for claiming that the land acquisition process for the proposed new Borim Bridge is complete and that the tendering process has begun. The comments, made while a case against the controversial project is still pending before the National Green Tribunal (NGT), were called “irresponsible” by locals.
Farmers and residents expressed dismay at what they view as a disregard for environmental and agricultural concerns. Some criticised Sequeira for failing to uphold his duty to safeguard the environment, particularly in his capacity as the Environment Minister.
In his statement on Friday, Sequeira acknowledged the ongoing NGT case but maintained that the bridge design had been finalised and tenders are being processed. He warned that continued reliance on repairs to the old Borim Bridge could lead to collapse, risking criticism for government inaction. However, he added that if the NGT’s decision went against the project, the government would reconsider its plans.
Villagers, however, dismissed the Minister’s justifications. “It is shameful for the Minister to make such statements when a case is still pending before the NGT,” said Xavier Fernandes, a Loutolim resident. “His duty is to protect farmers and the environment. We remain confident that the NGT will rule in our favour.”
Albert Pinheiro, a paddy farmer who cultivates the khazans now threatened by the new bridge, echoed these concerns, stating that the government’s efforts would be wasted if the NGT ruled in favour of the villagers. He urged the authorities to devise a solution that respects both the environment and the community.
Villagers also emphasised that they have already presented their objections to the NGT, citing concerns over environmental degradation and impacts on agriculture.
