A heart-wrenching tragedy has left Rivona in shock after two brothers,Rajendra Kashinath Gaonkar(46) andMohandas Kashinath Gaonkar(40), were electrocuted at Jogolimol, Sirsorem, while cutting grass for their cattle.

Police said the brothers accidentally came into contact with a live electric wire allegedly laid to ward off wild animals from nearby fields. The fatal shock struck just as they were about to load the last bundles of grass into their rickshaw. Both collapsed instantly and could not be revived despite frantic efforts by locals.

The brothers, residents of Pandav Sada, were unmarried and lived with their elderly mother. The family had already endured tragedy eight years ago when their father died after falling from a coconut tree. To sustain the household, Rajendra and Mohandas had taken up dairy farming, purchasing cows and a rickshaw. Only two days earlier, they had proudly completed the final installment on the rickshaw and received a subsidy.

“This is a shocking incident for us. The brothers were hardworking and respected members of the village. Their sudden death has left their mother devastated and completely helpless. Government support is required for her survival. They had just finished paying off their rickshaw instalments and had even told us about their plans to buy new machines to expand their milk business with subsidy money. We still cannot believe they are gone so suddenly,” said Vaishali Naik, Panch of Rivona Panchayat.

The Quepem police have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The bodies were shifted to the South Goa District Hospital for post-mortem, and investigations are underway. LPSI Joycee Carvalho of the Quepem Police Station is leading the probe.

The incident has left villagers grief-stricken and angry, with demands for stricter safety measures and accountability to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future.
