
Calangute Association staged a thrilling comeback to secure a memorable victory over Sao Jose de Areal and advance to the semifinals of the Custodio Memorial Football Tournament. The quarterfinal match was held at the Raia Panchayat Ground as part of the tournament organized by Raia Sporting Association.
Sao Jose de Areal began strongly, with Mohammad Mansori nearly finding the net early in the match. Calangute responded quickly, with Sahil Shaikh going close moments later. The breakthrough came when Stalen Oliveira struck with a sharp diagonal shot to give Areal the lead. Calangute pressed for an equalizer, but a crucial goal-line clearance by Bersel Viegas denied Richard Cardoso. Areal then extended their advantage with a composed finish by Ashnoy Gomes, heading into the break with a two-goal cushion.
The second half saw Calangute take control. Ashwyn D’Souza kickstarted the comeback, pulling one back for his team. Shortly after, Fasel D’Souza netted the equalizer, setting up a dramatic conclusion. Areal nearly responded with a long-range effort from Ashnoy Gomes, but Calangute’s goalkeeper made a crucial save.
As the match approached its conclusion, Domnic Fernandes stepped up with a spectacular long-range strike that found the back of the net, completing Calangute's comeback and securing a place in the semifinals.
Peter Ferrao, former president of Raia Sporting Club, was the chief guest and presented the Man of the Match award to Domnic Fernandes for his match-winning performance.
