CALANGUTE: The Candolim villagers unanimously resolved to oppose Sunburn or any other large scale musical events in the village citing noise pollution and other negative influences associated with such events.
The decision was arrived at the gram sabha held on Sunday, where members resisted moves to the festival as it would have a detrimental effect on the community.
Gram sabha member Anthony D’Souza said the panchayat should not grant permission for the festival as the organisers where shown the door by Goans for its negative effect on society.
Gram sabha members also opposed the festival because of the traffic congestion caused by it, stating that because of the chaotic situation caused by festival in December, many of the old-time regular visitors have stopped coming to Candolim.
A resolution to hold a protest meeting on Tuesday against the statements on St Francis Xavier made by Subhash Velingkar was also adopted at the gram sabha held in the panchayat hall.
Another resolution to renovate the panchayat ghar was also adopted. Villagers urged the panchayat to take action against hotels which have built illegal structures in the CRZ no-development zone.
Gram sabha members said all the bus-stops in Candolim should have proper signboards for the convenience of visitors and no parking of private vehicles should be allowed at the bus-stops. Villagers urged the panchayat to address the nuisance created by stray dogs and to act against hotels releasing sewage in fields. Other issues discussed included the law and order problems, the dilapidated conditions of the Candolim football ground and illegal activities at the beach.
