Raising a serious public health concern, Benaulim MLA Capt Venzy Viegas has called for immediate action against the unauthorised sale of unhygienic fish in Seraulim, warning of potential health risks and outbreaks if the issue is not promptly addressed.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Capt Viegas urged the South Goa District Collector to intervene without delay, citing reports that fish is being sold in unsanitary conditions, possibly without regulatory checks or adherence to food safety norms.

“The unauthorised sale of unhygienic fish in Seraulim is a serious threat to public health. I strongly urge the South Goa Collector to take immediate and decisive action to prevent a potential outbreak,” said Capt Viegas.

He emphasized that the lack of hygiene in fish handling and the absence of proper licensing or inspection could lead to foodborne illnesses, especially during the monsoon season when spoilage risks are higher.

The MLA has also called for regular monitoring by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and local authorities to ensure that all seafood sold in the area meets basic safety and hygiene standards.

Residents have echoed his concerns, with several complaining about foul odours and lack of refrigeration at makeshift fish stalls operating without oversight.
