Captain Viriato Questions Housie Ban, Calls Out Casino Double Standards

MPCaptain Viriato has expressed shock and disbelief over the recent ban on the popular game of Housie, stating he is completely unaware of the reasons behind the government's decision. Reacting to the move, he highlighted how Housie has long been a cherished tradition in Goan communities, especially during football tournaments, church and chapel feasts.

“We’ve been used to playing Housie during our local festivals—it’s something that brings people together,” he said. “There’s excitement, laughter, and a sense of community as players wait anxiously for their numbers to be called, hoping to win a prize.”

Viriato questioned the logic behind categorizing Housie as a social evil, drawing a stark comparison with the flourishing casino industry in Goa. “If the government sees Housie as a problem, how can they ignore the magnitude of what’s happening in the casinos?” he asked.

His remarks have sparked a broader conversation about cultural traditions versus commercial gambling, as many in the community rally behind the call to review the ban and recognize the role of games like Housie in fostering social bonding.
