CM Intervenes, Cancels GMCH CMO’s Suspension Ordered by Health Minister
A major controversy has erupted in Goa after Health Minister Vishwajit Rane suspended Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar, a senior doctor and Chief Medical Officer at Goa Medical College (GMC). The suspension followed a surprise visit by Rane to the GMC casualty ward, reportedly prompted by a complaint from a senior journalist who alleged that his mother-in-law was denied a B12 injection and mistreated by Dr. Kuttikar. During the visit, Rane, accompanied by media, publicly reprimanded the doctor and ordered his immediate suspension, accusing him of “arrogant behaviour” towards a patient.
The decision sparked strong backlash from the medical community, political leaders, civil society, and citizens, who condemned the public humiliation of the doctor and the minister's approach. The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Goa chapter, criticized the action, stating that the matter should have been handled through proper administrative procedures and that Dr. Kuttikar was not given an opportunity to present his side.
Public outrage grew after a video of the incident circulated widely on social media, prompting intervention from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. On Sunday, Sawant announced the revocation of Dr. Kuttikar’s suspension, affirming that the state government recognizes the dedication of its healthcare workers and is committed to supporting them. While the government has confirmed that a formal inquiry will continue, Dr. Kuttikar will not remain suspended during the investigation.
