CM Pramod Sawant: Tourists visit Goa more for temples and culture as it becomes a yog bhoomi

Goa is undergoing a remarkable transformation in its tourism identity, shifting from its long-standing image as a beach paradise to a hub of culture and spirituality. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, speaking at the ‘Sanatan Rashtra Shankhnad Mahotsav’ in Ponda, emphasized that while Goa was once synonymous with “sun, sand, and sea,” today’s visitors are increasingly drawn to its rich cultural heritage and magnificent temples. He highlighted that these temples are uniquely maintained by local communities rather than the government, preserving age-old customs and traditions.

Speaking at the Shankhnad Mahotsav, Sawant described Goa as a “yog bhoomi” (land of devotion and yoga) and “go-mata bhoomi” (land of cows), moving away from its reputation as a “bhog bhoomi” (land of pleasure). He credited organizations like the Sanatan Sanstha for raising spiritual awareness and promoting Sanatan Dharma, noting a growing trend of tourists seeking spiritual experiences in the state. This evolving narrative is supported by a 10.5% increase in tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2025, with over 28.5 lakh visitors. Tourism officials attribute this growth to improved air connectivity, targeted international outreach, and innovative offerings such as spiritual circuits and hinterland trails, positioning Goa as a “future-ready destination” rooted in culture and tradition.
