Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Thursday acknowledged the rising number of divorce cases in Goa, expressing concern over the growing trend and disappointment over the lack of support for preventive measures.

Speaking in the Assembly, Sawant pointed out that the government’s earlier proposal to introduce pre-marital counselling had been opposed. “We had suggested pre-marital counselling to help couples understand the responsibilities of marriage, but it was not supported,” he said.

Emphasising the importance of strengthening the institution of marriage, the Chief Minister said efforts must be made to prevent marriages from ending in divorce.

He also assured that the government will take concrete steps to expedite the resolution of over 2,200 pending matrimonial cases currently before the courts, to provide relief to those awaiting justice.
