CM Sawant Highlights Need for Digital Taxi Booking System After Driver Assault and Vehicle Theft

Following the recent assault and carjacking of a taxi driver in North Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday stressed the urgent need to implement digital systems such as app-based taxi bookings to improve passenger verification and ensure driver safety.

“In the incident, someone booked a taxi, attacked the driver, and fled with the vehicle. If a proper digital system had been in place, it would have been much easier for the police to identify the culprits,” said CM Sawant, referring to Thursday's violent episode in which the driver sustained grievous injuries.

The Chief Minister added that the state government is actively exploring technology-driven reforms to enhance safety, accountability, and traceability in Goa’s taxi sector — long criticized for lack of regulation and digital infrastructure.

The case is currently under investigation by Pernem Police, who have filed an FIR against six unidentified persons.
