MLA Jit Arolkar has urged the State Government to legalise Dhirio, the traditional bullfighting sport, calling it an integral part of Goan culture and heritage. Raising the issue during the Assembly session, Arolkar said that the sport, despite being banned, continues to hold cultural significance for many Goans.
In response, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant acknowledged that Dhirio is currently banned by a High Court order. However, he assured the House that the government is exploring the possibility of legalising the sport through proper legal channels.
“The matter has been referred to the Law Department,” Dr. Sawant informed, adding that consultations with all relevant departments are underway to determine the feasibility of framing legislation in line with judicial directives.
The proposal to legalise Dhirio has reignited debate over the preservation of cultural traditions versus legal and animal welfare concerns.
