PONDA: The farmers of Borim echoed the sentiments of their Loutolim counterparts, stating that WRD Minister’s statement on land acquisition by October 20 is premature and misleading, as a case filed by Borim and Loutolim farmers is currently sub judice in the National Green Tribunal (NGT), and up for hearing this month.
David Rodrigues, one of the affected villagers, questioned how the government could finalise the acquisition process when the issue remains unresolved in court. Rodrigues also pointed out that villagers had previously met Shirodkar seven times, but he had failed to explain the alignment of the proposed bridge.
Rahul Naik, another local, reiterated the concerns raised during Borim’s Gram Sabha resolution. “Before moving forward, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Minister Shirodkar should sit down with Borim villagers to explain the bridge’s alignment, particularly regarding the homes and khazan lands that would be affected,” he said. Naik alleged that the new Borim bridge alignment, which would follow the shortest route, is being designed to benefit coal transportation to Mormugao Port, raising concerns about potential coal pollution in the village.
Tulshidas Borkar, a house owner, said he discovered his house might be demolished for the bridge alignment after a recent survey. As a tenant living on a landlord’s property, he questioned, “Where would we go if our home is destroyed?”
Locals also reminded Minister Shirodkar of a gram sabha resolution passed on July 28, 2024, which called for discussions between Borim Panchayat, the Chief Minister, and National Highway authorities regarding the new bridge’s alignment. The resolution stated that no homes should be demolished, in line with assurances previously given by the Chief Minister. The villagers are urging Borim Panchayat to follow up on this resolution and ensure proper engagement with the government.
