ASSAGAO: The Assagao Gram Sabha was rocked by three major issues plaguing the village with Sarpanch Hanumant Naik saying that panchayat was doing everything possible within its powers to redress these issues.

Though there was not much discussion on the bad roads as the matter is sought to be taken up to court, the villagers sought to know the status of the Rumba Club.

Kedar Kamat raised the issue of illegal houses coming up in survey number 145 ‘Lakshminagar ‘ and sought panchayat action against the illegalities . A very important resolution with regards to approvals for tree felling was also taken.

The Sarpanch informed the gram sabha that the panchayat was paying the fees to the advocate for fighting the case against the club at which the villagers sought to know till how long it will go on and demanded the panchayat should go ahead and seal the club as there were lots of irregularities observed.

A resolution was taken in this regard to be forwarded to the Deputy Collector.

Alex Rodrigues brought to the notice of the panchayat that the forest department collects a paltry sum of Rs 100 per tree as deposit and gives approval to cut trees and plants three times more in the same area.

He also pointed out that the forest dept writes to the panchayat to monitor replanting of trees and felt that it was again impossible and impractical.

The sarpanch said the panchayat through the local Biodiversity Committee will write to the forest dept that it should not involve the panchayat but instead it should only check if replanting is done and then inform the panchayat so that the panchayat can do the necessary needful.

Kamat raised the issue of illegal houses coming up in survey number 145 of Comunidade land and said that it was a big fraud and said they had blessings of politicians.

who were hell bent on creating a new ‘Motidongor’ for Assagao and feared that this would ruin Assagao and urged the panchayat to act in this case.

Other issues such as halt to megaprojects and swimming pools and half to any possible clubs and spas in future in the village were also discussed. The traffic woes in the village were also discussed with chairman of traffic committee Anthony Fernandes saying that the committee was working to ensure that problems arising due to traffic mismanagement do not arise.
