A crusher operating at survey number 8/1 in Guddemol has gone underwater following the first spell of monsoon rains, reigniting local outrage over its location and legality. Residents claim the structure is built directly over a natural nallah, making it prone to flooding and posing environmental risks.
Despite two earlier reports by Herald Media, inspections by the local panchayat and the Town and Country Planning Department, and a stay order against further activity, the crusher continues to function. Locals say the owner has not only defied the orders but also proceeded with fencing work around the site — a move they allege blatantly disregards environmental regulations.
The controversy deepened after the village panchayat recently renewed the crusher’s provisional NOC. Residents have questioned the move, pointing to possible procedural lapses and suspecting political interference or corruption.
“This crusher is submerged because it’s built on a nallah. Yet, authorities still allow it to operate. Is this ignorance or deliberate protection?” questioned local resident Swapnil Bhandari. “There is corruption within the panchayat. Despite the stay order, the owner fenced off the area,” he added.
Calling the situation alarming, locals are now urging immediate intervention from the Department of Mines and Geology and the Goa State Pollution Control Board. They say the crusher is a recurring threat to the environment and public safety and accuse officials of failing to enforce regulatory measures.
