CUNCOLIM: Concerned over a culvert collapse, locals from Cuncolim have urgently appealed to the State government authorities to take up the repair of the busy National Highway 66 and a culvert at Uskiniband.

Pointing to exposed steel rods and lowered road, locals fear a disaster if steps are not taken immediately to repair and restrengthen the culvert.

Raison Almeida, a local said that the culvert has become weak and it is important because it links the National Highway 66.

Almeida demanded that the engineers of PWD and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) should immediately inspect the culvert and take measures to repair it as it was posing a threat to motorists and the lives of pedestrians. If required, the government should close this road stretch and divert the traffic.

Another local Joseph Dias too said that the culvert was in need of urgent repairs. Several vehicles including inter-States buses, heavy trucks and containers are using this highway. “We don’t want tragedy like Karwar where bridge collapsed, to happen here. We want the PWD to make aware of the impending danger and take steps to repair it,” Dias said.
